Carrie and Me

Carrie Matheson is a revelation to me.....ever since I started watching Homeland in it's 1st season she captivated me with her realness. That's one of the only words that I will use to describe her on this blog. If you read other publications or simply watch the show on your own accord then your word for her might be crazy. And that she might very well be, but to me Carrie unearths an everyday quality that I have yet to see in a television character. The show's creators allow the viewers into her mind, as scitzo as it may be. We get to see the vivid colors of her thinking process evolve at every step. We also get to see her go down the deep corridors that most of us "real" people recognize. Sometimes it is hard to watch....that might be why I can't take my eyes off of her as her manic eyes search for answers. Her emotions lead her alot of the time; a thing that I bet hinders her ability to be a great spy. Her mind, tho, cannot be matched in it's efforts to unearth what people are really thinking. That is what makes Carrie so unique. She really cares about the outcome. She REALLY cares about Brody. You can't find that kind of dedication now a days.......She made "The Choice" to go all the way with Brody.....she "gave it all up". Now she believes in him so much that she wants to clear his name! WOW! What a woman....I just hope that it doesn't backfire on her and Brody is still on his terror rampage? Who knows? This wouldn't be the first time in history that a woman was blinded by love. Well Carrie has blinded this blogger with her fine mind and "unique" perspective on how to live. I think I'm in love.....now all I have to do is make her forget Brody.

This Couldn't Wait

Today I wanted to blog about Kobe Bryant being a "sympathetic figure" in the midst of this season. A fluff piece about the dichotomy of a millionaire who is self engulfed with himself and his goals and the notion of feeling "sorry" for him. But, when I heard the news about the shooting deaths in Connecticut I decided to write about something that matters. I don't know if anyone will even read this, but it couldn't wait. The world, the country that we live in...we have to wake up. There are so many layers to tragedies like this. We will hear all the appeals for stauncher gun control and all the prayers and such. I agree with all that, and I welcome it, but when are we going to get to the heart of the matter. Something is going on and we have to try to solve the riddle. We are so concerned with getting money and progressing up social ladders that we forget about people. Forgotten people fail themselves......this guy whoever he was, was forgotten. Love the people that are around you and don't turn your back on them when you see that they have problems. Do what you can to help people when they are in a mental downpour. All we have really are our souls and hearts to give to people in need. This guy did a terrible thing and ruined a bunch of other people's lives. The 18 children will never grow up to reach their potential of who they can be, the children who witnessed this cowardly act of depression will never be able top forget this day. Some will never move on from this and thus it will ruin their lives....the cycle will run. We have to love one another more and realize what is important to human beings and what is not. Lets try to Love one another.........Lets try

Hard to Win Fantasy Football if Real Football Gives Up.

I suffered a tough loss to fellow blog contributor last night. Losing by less than a point in fantasy football is like watching the person in front of you grab the last 60" TV on Black Friday1. It's like trying to solve a rubix cube and having ONE yellow tile out of place. It's like yanking out a tooth that just started to wiggle yesterday only to have the tooth fairy leave you a quarter instead of the much anticipated dollar2.

No one should have to lose by less than a point. I lost by 0.48 points. After an incredibly long work day, I was left with no 60" TV, a dent in the wall from the unsolved rubix cube I had thrown, what felt like a monstrous toothache3, and a bank account less the league buy-in4.

Down by 17.38 points (in a 0.5 PPR league) going into last night's game with both Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels in my line-up, I was facing a nail-biter. I knew the points were not guaranteed. To my surprise, neither were the minutes played by the Texan players. With 7:23 left in the 4th quarter, New England up 42-7, Houston had taken out some of the starters. Tate was running the ball, and Yates was throwing...throwing to Posey5, NOT Andre Johnson.

Now you tell me, how is one supposed to win a matchup when the players slated to play, don't play? Yahoo had not shut down6 and given up on my game, what allows Coach Kubiak to give up7? Coach, your players performed poorly, they obviously need more practice! Have Yates throw it, for all I care8 - just give the ball to Johnson or Daniels ONE MORE TIME.

Each reception = 0.5 points
ONE MORE TIME = one more reception

Therefore...

ONE MORE RECEPTION = 0.5 points = enough points to win the match up!

Shame on me for not starting Heath Miller. I let the ugly Charlie Brown uniforms and questionable QB status blur my fantasy vision. I should not have doubted Big Ben...he did promise to take Miller to the Pro-Bowl.

It's going to take me awhile to get over this one. (And let's not even get started on my Pick 'ems for the week...)

Fantasy Football is NOT just a stupid game, folks9.

1I would know. Flashback to Best Buy, Black Friday 2009.
2Do kids still get money under their pillow these days? Or has currency been replaced with iTunes gift cards?
3Quite possibly caused by the clenching of the teeth as I continued to refresh the Yahoo app on my iPad.
4Losers do not win any money in my league.
5Let me introduce you to DeVier Posey, rookie from Ohio State. Available in 100% of leagues.
6I think Yahoo has learned its lesson.
7Greg Schiano says, "...fight until they tell us game over."
8I don't have Schaub as QB in any of my leagues. He can do backflips on the sideline for all I care.
9Your wives and co-workers haven't lived until they have endured a frustrating season full of injury reports and inflated projections.

David Stern vs. The Spurs..The Newest NBA rivalry?

I wanna start this post off by first saying that I hate the Spurs. It's that plain and simple. I've been a devoted Mavericks fan since 1992, so that tells the entire story. Throughout the 90's and most of the 2000's, the Spurs have just simply had our number. Thus the hate. I have also hated the way in which they have gone about their methodical superiority. Pop, the mad genius of a coach; the big fundamental; never makes mistakes, the way that he fell into their laps in the 1997 draft and instantly made them contenders. I hate the way they know that they have been the best franchise in basketball since I can remember and they don't flaunt it. I hate fake humbleness. I don't care for the way Tony Parker can get into the lane at will or the way Ginobilli flops and competes his ass off every minute of every game he is in. Bottom line is that the Spurs do things the right way and they have been rewarded for their diligence. Yeah, Yeah , Yeah.....good for them. They have their 4 championships and the best PF to ever play the game. They have had enough good. That's why I wasn't upset when David Stern jumped the gun and fined the Spurs $250,000.00 for nothing. The power drunk midget cannot stand a slight......he took the fact that Pop sent the stars home as a slight. So, he took immediate action! I love it when the Spurs get the shaft. Then, this morning to my delight I saw this :)

Can't wait to see what David "Napoleon" Stern says about this!!!! And I can't believe that TD was involved! Ok, I'm done, just giddy.

You've Just Been Posteriz'd.

You gotta love how sports has managed to find a way to embarrass the already embarrassed. To be ankle-broken is one thing, to be posterized is another.

Captured in a moment's time. Not just any moment - a moment of weakness by one completely dominated by strength and vitality of another. A freeze frame reminder of the oohs and ahhs tweeted. Sportscenter's Top 10, centerfolds of magazines, posters on walls, front pages of websites...all allow those who missed the moment to share in the trending topic and those who were witness to it the first time to relive it.

Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Blake Griffin...just a few who have mastered the art of posterization. Validating their superiority on the court with monster dunks is just the salt to their tequila.

So, here's a Shot for Thought...What if we could bring posterizing to life? I don't mean 3-D posters or 4-D Fatheads. What if we could posterize moments in people's everyday lives? Imagine capturing an "I told you so" moment with your superior at work. Or an "I don't need you" incident with a parent or guardian. Makes you thirsty, doesn't it?

MTV is on the right track with "Punk'd" (recently revived). The difference: no hidden cameras, no practical jokes. You've just been posteriz'd.

Battleship Football.

We're going out on a limb here...comparing the classic game of Battleship to the more serious 'game' of Fantasy Football. Two players face off - each with their own grid/roster. In battleship, players strategically arrange their ships. Aircraft carrier, battleship, submarine, cruiser, and destroyer. In Fantasy, each player analytically sets their roster. QB, WR, RB, TE, Flex, Def.

Objective: to be the last one standing. Just as ships are sunk in Battleship, players go down in football.

TE 87 - "HIT!"
Gronkowski down will hurt a lot of teams, I imagine. Especially those who used a first round pick on him. How many decent tight ends are out on the waiver? Good luck with that one.

RB 23 - "HIT!"
Who in your league scrambled for Ronnie Hillman? Willis McGahee tore his MCL and is out for the season. Did that one sink your ship?

WR 85 - "HIT!"
This ship has been doomed since week 4. Greg Jennings has been everything from O, P, Q, I...frustrating, to say the least.

QB 7 - "HIT!"
Give this guy a break. Him and his wife just gave birth to their first child, Benjamin Roethlisberger, Jr. I'm sure he wants to spend some time with his kid.

And then there's the hits that cause temporary unconsciousness or confusion. The ship pieces that got so discombobulated that they have to go through a series of manufacturer tests to be able to be used again in the game.

QB 10 - "HIT and CONCUSSED!"
Consider this hit crisis averted when the Redskins played the Falcons early October. Robert Griffin, III was knocked out and diagnosed with a mild concussion. Fortunately, for fantasy owners, he has shown no signs of a set-back.

QB 6 and QB 11 - "HIT and CONCUSSED!"
Week 10 was not kind to quarterbacks. Both Jay Cutler and Alex Smith went down, and both have been battling clearance into the game. Might the concussion have cost Smith his starting role with the 49ers? We'll see how Colin plays today. Good news for the Bears (and Jason Campbell), as Cutler is cleared to play this week.

RB 25 and QB 7 - "HIT and CONCUSSED!"
The Eagles have struggled all season and concussions to LeSean McCoy and Michael Vick just come a la carte. The offensive line has not been kind to Vick. A concussion has been chasing him since week 1. Ernie Sims finally got to him.

Good luck in your game of Battleship this week. How many of your ships will sink by the end of the football week?

Real Talk

This blog is about honesty. We want to convey thoughts and issues that mean something to us. Hopefully, it gets information out there and entertains you, as well. All this done in a honest medium. So ya'll tell me.. Who are we really mad with tonight when the Knicks visit the Mavs at the AAC? Be honest now...are you mad at JKidd for bailing on us in favor of the Knicks? Are you mad at Cuban for not taking the time to meet with DWill; therefore (possibly) breaking up that sweet dream tandem of JKidd and JKidd with a jumper? Are you mad at Tyson for leaving, or are you mad at Cuban for not ponying up the cash right after the championship? Real MFFLs have some decisions to make tonight. Maybe you have already made yours, maybe not...but what would be prudent here? Being A MAVS fan for Life means backing the team first and foremost. Now, that doesn't mean that you can't be disappointed when the head makes decisions that you don't agree with. It's all a part of being a die hard. It's a conundrum that's hard to solve. We must be vigilant in our thoughts on the matter tho. Boo Kidd and Tyson if you must, but remember what they did for us while they wore our colors...this story is not flat or black; its round and grey. Loyalty isn't what it used to be in sport and that goes both ways from management to the talent. Tonight, look up in the rafters and remember the joy that these players brought us in '11.....then boo them lustily.

Shots, Shots, Shots...Weekend Shots!

Since this is the first time we are rolling "shots" out, I guess that an explanation is in order. These are just some quick notes from things that we were paying attention to this weekend, drink up!....knowledge son:

  • Our beloved Mavs squeaked by the Cavs on Saturday...ugly win, but a win nonetheless...
  • Oregon and K-State lost proving the adage that the Irish really are "lucky" or that Nick Saban really did make a pack with the devil
  • We finally got around to seeing "Argo" this weekend. Ben Afflect is on a roll directing/staring in movies at the same damn time! Pulling off the Kanye double threat....Thoughtful and funny, this film is a must see....if you like smart things that is.
  • Oklahoma State men's basketball team won the Puerto Rico shootout with an impressive win over N.C. State. Dallas natives Marcus Smart and LeBryan Nash lead the team to victory. Smart is a born leader; it will be interesting to see how much he chages the program
  • The Baylor women's basketball team lost for the first time in 42 games. One day after I (tshurn) predicted no one would come within 25 points of them all year...prognostication is the devils work....call me the cooler.
  • Gronk broke his forearm; putting a dent into my fantasy football aspirations......cooler
  • A.Dd+ won best rap group in the Dallas Observer's best of, music poll and they also scored the cover of the publication.....#ADDHOE!
  • The Cowboys escaped with a narrow victory over Cleveland...has there ever been more of an example of playing down or up to competition....the answer is no!
  • Sundays "Homeland" episode was was fantastic as usual. Brody and Carey got it in again while her entire team of CIA snoops listened in one it! Brody was kidnapped and heliflown?? to an undisclosed location...this damn show is so epic!
  • Adrien Broner aka "The Problem", or as we call him here at Words, "Floyd Mayweather Jr Jr"....dispatched some poor soul this weekend. He came out to Kendrick Lamar's "Backseat freestyle"....KL is taking over the world.....yabish!

One Love

Emotionally Pink.

Pink's performance last night on the 40th AMA awards immediately left me with things to say...things to feel.

It's amazing what artists can do - how far they've come in the industry. They truly define artistry by taking performance to a whole new level. Taking a simple stage and bringing it to life - their life. Pink took everything music stands for and put it into words and movements in her performance of Try. She put on a show...she told a story without sacrificing her song. Beginning to end, it was heart-winning.

Justin Bieber is talented; there is no doubting that. His performances are entertaining, and we have Usher to thank for that. Unfortunately, the entertainment factor becomes the choreographed dancing, and the words, the lyrics, are distracted by the sliding and the popping. The beats are filled with steps. The soul is lost in the movement. The heart is removed.

Carly Rae Jepsen, you had a good year. Your song went viral with the help of the US Swim Team, but until you learn to perform and show the world your lyrics are more than just words, you will be no more respected than the next internet virus. Please, don't call me...not even maybe.

Death of the College Basketball Fan

It's November and that means that it is college hoops season! I'm excited! But am I the only one? Amongst everyone I know, I can say that I know about three "real" college basketball fans!?! WTF?! I know that I am using a lot of exclamation marks, but I tend to do that when I first realize that something really surprises me. I mean, we are talking about the best game ever invented1. That's indisputable. I won't go into all the reasons why that is the case on this post, but if anyone wants proof I will write a long dissertation on the subject2. We are also talking about a segment of the game (college) that has more merit than its professional counterpart. College ball has its flaws3, and its governing body clearly has very unintelligent monkeys running it; but the positives far outnumber the negatives. College basketball players play the game for the love. These young student athletes still love the game that they grew up dreaming about, and they know they have reached the zenith. 90 percent of them know that their playing days will be over after these special four years4, so why not have fun doing it? That attitude shows with the passion and sacrifice that they leave out on the court. These are some of the reasons that I am so surprised that no one watches or cares about my beloved game anymore. If I slow down and think clearly5, then I will realize that in this day and age college ball is not the same game that I grew up watching. I started watching and falling in love with the college game when Christian Laettner, Alonzo Mourning, Billy Owens, and Shaquille O'Neal were ruling the game. These guys were household names. Many players stayed at a program for at least two or three great years. Now the best players leave after one good year6. The main problem is that humans don't care about you unless they know who you are. We don't know who the stars are anymore. That's not a good formula for a game that's star driven. So, in a last ditch effort to familiarize my peeps with some stars/teams...here is a list of players and their respective teams to look out for this season......Cody Zeller/ Indiana; Mason Plumlee/ Duke; Otto Porter/ Georgetown; Kyle Wiltjer/ Kentucky; James Michael Mcadoo/ North Carolina; Doug McDermott/ Creighton; Phil Pressey/ Missouri; Tony Mitchell/ North Texas; Nate Wolters/ S. Dakota St; Isaiah Canaan/ Murray St.....Enjoy these guys and these teams this season, and next time you are choosing between watching Kentucky vs. Indiana or the Wizards vs. the Bobcats, choose the bluebloods son. Tradition and passion always trump lazy millionaires who blow.

---

Thank you, James Naismith.
2 Just take my word on it...only real college bball heads would want to read that book
3 short 3 point line, mediocre talent sometimes, hypocritical governing body...etc.
4 I know I knew
Rarely happens
I am excluding last year's Kentucky team...that was a great year...one for the ages.

Royalisms, never forgotten.

The Texas Longhorn football program lost a great one this past week. Darrell K Royal.

"To be successful as a team, you must bring all of the parts together and play as one heartbeat."
20 years as the head coach at the University of Texas at Austin, Royal only knew how to win. He turned a losing program into a winning one.

In honor and remembrance of DKR, The Longhorns ran Royal's Wishbone formation in today's game against Iowa State. With "DKR" decals on their helmets, the Longhorns proudly won 33-7.

Every pass, every tackle, every kick resonated in the stadium, which was renamed after Darrell K Royal in 1996. We bleed Burnt Orange for Coach Royal. Texas Fight!

"SupaLion"!!! Crowder

Well fellow MFFLs, the time has come! Jae Crowder is finally going to get the minutes he deserves. Unfortunately, Jae's time to shine comes with a caveat. Another one of this blog's favorite players, The Matrix, is out for a small period of time. That blows. Oh well, this is professional sports - injuries happen. We were becoming concerned that an out of shape Troy Murphy was getting The Lion's share of minutes Jae was getting before he signed. Not that we don't like Troy...but until he starts making his open jump shots and gets up and down the floor with more fluidity, we are ignoring him.

Let's just list all the positives that Jae brings to the team. Number 1, his hair. Dude's hair makes him stand out to the North Dallas trust fund baby chicks in the bottom bowl of the AAC. Which, in turn, makes them pay more attention to the game, and they just may stop sipping their Merlot for a minute, look up from their IPhone5s and cheer for their home team. The energy level in the building goes up! Number 2, his tats. I think his entire torso and arms are tatted up. We like this for other reason than we miss Delonte (Love you, dog :( ). Number 3, the real shit...the guy's motor never stops. You are gonna get all that he has. You simply cannot make that same statement about at least 80% of the NBA. I know, it's sad. But it's the truth. Number 4, his production. He knocks down open shots, 3's, and 2's; he rebounds and defends. What more can you ask of an NBA player? From all accounts, his attitude might be his best attribute. Carlisle says he listens and absorbs knowledge, and that is key for an NBA rookie...and we all know what Carlisle thinks of rookies...he doesn't think of them at all...

Okay, so we love Jae "SupaLion" Crowder. We just made that nickname up; every cult NBA player needs a nickname.

82 and Oh, no 'mo.

Two games into the season, first loss last night. Is this where we start to lose the FMFFL1? The same fans that completely lost faith when we let Tyson Chandler and Barea go? The ones that threw in the towel when Jet and Kidd left the city and then threw an "Everything is Bigger in Texas"-sized fit when Deron chose Brooklyn this past June.

All the fakers had given up before the season, or rather pre-season, even started. Who the hell is Melvin Ely2? Don't worry, FMFFL's, he did not make the cut.

And then the tip-off for the 2012 season happened. The hopeless Mavs3 beat Kobe and the respected Lakers. And just like that, there was a mountain of hope again. Talk of an undefeated season4 was in the air. Only to be quickly silenced 24 hours later. An all too familiar scene - Mavs blow their first half lead and lose to the Utah Jazz. All FMFFL quickly abandon the NBA season and turn to their fantasy football line-ups5.

We're 1-1. The season is not lost, my friends. Please do not jump on that Houston bandwagon6 just yet.

---

1 Fake Mavs Fan For Life.
2 Rhymes with "really"...unlike the more well known Eli of the Manning family.
3 Not to be confused for the disappointing Cowboys.
4 People who speak of this are called, DFMFFL - Delusional Fake Mavs Fans For Life.
5 Is anyone really starting a Charger or a Chief tonight? Good luck with that.
6 There's a new beard in town at the Toyota Center, and he's got Houston-ites thinking Championship.

Bitch don't kill my Vibe

Kendrick Lamar is 25 years old...within his music there reasonates an acute awareness of someone much older and wise, but he is still a kid; Learning, discovering, recognizing, and relaying...life. That's the scary part. When genious keeps learning and creating (ie: Picasso or Tupac1); they open the possibilities to creating memorable art. It's exciting.

I started listening to hip hop around 1987, so I came right in when Westcoast gangsta rap was starting to take over the industry. I had an older cousin who lived in Indianapolis at the time. I was a sheltered kid from St. Louis, MO. My parents hardly ever let me go outside and roam the neighborhood alone. In the summer of '88 my mom sent me and my sister to stay with my aunt for a month and a half in Indiana...it was my first summer of freedom! Cousin Tony, 5 years my senior, took me to the basement and gave me a step by step education to rap music. I remember feeling the truth. Tony gave me two cassette tapes to take back to the Lou2...one was Eazy E's single "Boyz in the hood," and the other tape was NWA's "Straight outta Compton."

I listened to those tapes probably everyday for 6 or 7 months. Always with my cousin Donnell, upstairs at my grandmother's house3. NWA hooked me with cold beats, fresh lyrics about the streets and officials with power who abused that said power4. You could tell that these cats were speaking the real truth from their own point of view without fear of retaliation. Cousin Tony used to tell me "these niggas got heart!" It made me feel down to listen to them preach. Even at a young age I realized that the 2 "real" emcees of the group were Ice Cube and The DOC...the poets, the lyracists. All backed by "Beats by Dre5."

The Westcoast kept a hold of me all the way through my family's move to TX in 1992. By that time, I was a full-fledged hip-hop fan with allegiance to the Westside. In high school, I started listening to Tupac, Snoop, MC Eight, Dre, MC Ren...all the west coast G.O.D.S. They spoke to me...that's why when I first heard Kendrick Lamar's "Section 80" mixtape, it brought it all back to me. He isn't a gangsta rapper, but he is Westside. Compton, in fact. When I first heard him spit, he reminded me of Tupac Shakur and Eminem. The standout track to me was the J. Cole6 produced "HiiiPower." Lamar speaks of old and new on the track. Marcus Garvey to Malcom X and Martin Luther (who also appears on his new LP "good Kid, m.A.A.d city) to building new pyramids and writing our "own" hyroglyphics. In other words, he takes lessons from the past to build some new shit. I'm down with that. The kid is smart.

On the aforementioned GKMC, Lamar is all over the place with his stories from the streets in Compton. Stories about his life and the people he has come across in his 25 years of living there. His manic ADD flow is held together by an inherent genious of putting words together in a way that lets you know he had a clear plan from the start7. The deeply personal "Sherane aka Master Splinter's daughter" starts the CD off with a ghetto tale of unrequited lust. The end of that song trails off into a voice mail from his mother asking him to bring the family Van home 'cause she will be late to a meeting if he doesn't...his father then chimes in with a profanity-laced tirade telling Lamar to bring home the dominoes that he borrowed from his father. His father ends the rant with, "This mothafuckas gonna kill my vibe." Lamar lets us into his life, much like Eminem. He does it with an emotional tinge of self-reflection that puts you in a Pac state of mind. With all that said, all the comparisons to Pac, EM, and Jay not withstanding, I believe Lamar can be more like a young Nas. Crafting a bonafide hip hop classic (Illmatic); all the while staying true to the lyricism that makes hip hop art in the first damn place...gritty enough to reassure us that this is a real documentary of the streets.

So next time you see me riding down 75 nodding my head with my wayfares on, rest assure I'm bumping "Good Kid, m.A.A.d city8", and bitch please don't kill my vibe.

---

1 Yes...I just compared Pablo Picasso to Tupac and Kendrick Lamar.
2 When he handed me the cassettes, he said, "If Aunt Walter Mae (my mother) finds these tapes, I'll whoop yo yella ass!"
3 Fuck the police!
4 Granny was hard of hearing, so she couldn't make out all the cuss words.
5 The real beats, not the headphones.
6 Another fantastic young hip hop artist.
7 He is similar in this way to Jay-Z.
8 Until the next classic hip hop album drops!
